Seven Tips for Choosing a Safe and Outstanding Rental for Your Next Vacation
No doubt you have seen and read some of the horror stories that some guests have experienced when they’ve booked an AirBnB or privately owned rental for their vacation. Some of the more mild stories illustrate lack of attention by the host and some of the worst of the stories include harassment and even violence.
As such, it’s no wonder why the AirBnB brand, and short term rental hosts, by proxy; are being targeted by hotel ads and social media trolls. Some of this attention has been unfortunately “earned” but most of it is nothing more than scare tactics. In any case, travelers are now concerned and perhaps a reminder of how avoid booking a stay with a nightmare host is long over due.
So, here we go…..
As a responsible traveler, it is important to do your due diligence when it comes to choosing a high quality and safe home for your vacation. Here are some simple tips to help you make an informed decision:
Start by thoroughly reading the listing description and looking at all of the photos. Pay attention to details such as the size and layout of the space, and the house rules, as well as any amenities that are included.
Take the time to read through at least ten reviews left by previous guests. Look for red flags such as a large number of negative reviews, or reviews that mention problems with cleanliness or safety. Also, if there is one, read the hosts’ response/s.
When booking on AirBnB, check to see if the host has a verified ID, as this is an indication that they have been screened by Airbnb and are not likely to be running a scam listing scheme.
Reach out to the host with any questions or concerns you may have before booking. A responsive and helpful host is a good sign that you will have a positive experience. Don’t skip this step. Ask a mundane or even obvious question to prompt a response from the host and note how long it takes them to reply
Consider the location of the Airbnb. Is it in a safe and desirable neighborhood? Is it close to public transportation and other amenities? If you do not know or have concerns, ask your host to describe the area / neighborhood and, again, read the reviews for clues to this issue as well.
Look for listings that include safety features such as smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. You may not need them but they’re invaluable if you do and their inclusion shows that the host is paying close attention to the safety of their guests.
I guarantee that by following these tips, you will drastically increase your chances of finding a first-rate privately owned rental home for your next vacation.
Happy travels!
